SAND 1 - Zweigelt

Tasting notes

Deep ruby red in color, with an expressive nose of ripe cherries and sour cherries. On the palate, elegant notes of spice and a subtle hint of vanilla unfold. Fine, well-structured tannins lead to a long and harmonious finish.

Location

The Zöhrer Winery is situated in the renowned Kremser Sandgrube, proudly bearing house number 1. The surrounding vineyards, rooted in powerful loess soils, have been part of the family’s winemaking heritage since 1270. In honor of this rich tradition spanning over 740 years, the estate created the exclusive SAND 1 Collection.

Food pairings

A perfect companion to Mediterranean cuisine, grilled or roasted red meats, and dishes featuring light, aromatic sauces.

RIED LIMBERG

Tasting notes

A complex and layered wine, revealing vibrant aromas of cherry, blackberry, and blackcurrant, complemented by delicate herbal nuances.

Location

Ried Kremser Limberg is the highest vineyard in the Krems Valley, set on mineral-rich gneiss loess and crystalline quartz rock. Its north–south row orientation ensures optimal ventilation and a dynamic interplay of warm and cool air, contributing to the wine’s distinctive character. The site is also known as the location where the world’s oldest Venus figurine—a 36,000-year-old depiction of a woman—was discovered.

Food pairings

An excellent match for aromatic Far Eastern cuisine, such as fish curry or tandoori chicken. It also pairs beautifully with classic Austrian dishes like fried chicken with potato salad or veal sweetbreads, as well as Mediterranean favorites like Fegato alla Veneziana (Venetian-style veal liver) or Greek moussaka.

The Vineyard

The Zöhrer family vineyards, some of which have been in family ownership for over 450 years, are situated around the wine town of Krems an der Donau on the exceptional left bank of the Danube in the Kremstal, approximately 70 km west of Vienna. The wooded hills of the Waldviertel shield the vineyards from icy northwesterly winds, while the sun warms the stony terraces during the day. At night, the fresh, aromatic forest air flows through the Kremstal into the Krems valley, creating a unique climate.

The combination of warm days and cool nights, the influence of the Danube, and the geological and climatic diversity of the vineyard sites contribute to the distinctive character of Zöhrer wines, recognized and esteemed internationally.

The Man Behind The Wine

Since 1270, Weingut Zöhrer has been cultivating the exceptional vineyards of Weinzierlberg. The Weinzierl district, home to around 3,400 residents, is one of the oldest areas in the millennium-old wine town of Krems on the Danube and the historic ancestral home of the Zöhrer family.

The townscape is defined by charming estates that, over the centuries, have evolved from mixed farms into today’s elegant winegrowers’ houses. The magnificent Kremser Weinzierlberg has long provided ideal soils and conditions for producing wines of outstanding character and quality.
